I love marketing. what I don't love is that five years into it, the big network agencies won't even give me a screening call.

Here's where I'm at. Roughly five years of digital and performance work: paid campaigns, SEO, social, content, lead gen, campaign execution. both B2B and B2C. Google Ads, Meta, GA4, GTM, the usual stack. Hands-on stuff that actually moves pipeline.

the goal is to land at Publicis, WPP, Omnicom, IPG, Dentsu. Marketing, brand, strategy, integrated marketing, something in that world. getting shortlisted has been brutal. Not landing the offer. getting past the first screen.

so for anyone inside those networks or recently out, I want the unvarnished version:

What are these shops actually screening for at the 4 to 6 year mark?
Does client-side, in-house digital experience count against me?
How much does agency-side experience really matter for getting in?
If the real target is brand, strategy or integrated marketing, what makes a performance-heavy profile credible?
What changes on the CV, and which roles should i even be applying to?

I asked this before and the replies were not what i expected. A guy who spent his entire career inside network agencies told me flat out: don't. His take, roughly: why would you swim over to a sinking ship? go indie, go in-house, go brand side. Life's better over there.

that broke my brain a little. my end goal is brand side, leaning strategy. The whole reason I was looking at agencies was to get exposure to bigger brands, because my day job has never put me anywhere near them. So the route i assumed was the shortcut is apparently the iceberg.

Someone else who worked at two of the big names I listed gave me a more practical breakdown. Their read:

Specialize. Pick a lane and go deep, because at 4 to 6 years you're more likely to get in as a specialist than as a senior. You're also too experienced for a junior seat. Their specialty was community management, then they went brand side and pivoted into consumer intelligence.

Everyone and their mother applies to the big names, so the shortlist problem never fully goes away. That's just the tax on wanting in.

Agency-side knowledge is preferred, even if it comes from a small shop. Brand-side can work, but it needs to be a brand with real spend behind it so you've touched multiple sides of the work instead of one narrow slice.

Show content chops. not "I can post." Knowing which words and images make people click, working with creators and designers, writing briefings that don't get ignored.

And rebuild the CV around the role you actually want, not the one you have. When they moved from community into consumer intelligence, the whole resume had to be rewritten to sell analytical skills.

That all lands. but I'm still stuck on the first reply. Is the network agency path genuinely a dead end, or is that just one bitter veteran? If brand side strategy is the destination and performance is where you're coming from, is there a smarter route than the agency networks everyone fights over?
